The Heaven's Gate cult was formed in the early 70s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, and is famous for the mass suicide committed by Applewhite and 39 of his followers in 1997. Believing they would be taken to the "next level" of existence by the Hale-Bopp Comet, these 40 people referred to themselves as the "Away Team."
